Understanding Drug Test Timelines and Managing Delays
Drug testing is an integral part of many background checks. Below, we outline the typical timeline for receiving results and what steps you can take if delays occur.
Typical Timeline for Drug Test Results
The average turnaround time for drug test results is 1–2 business days from the time the lab receives the specimen. However, please note that this timeframe is not guaranteed and is subject to various factors that may affect processing time. Delays may occur in the following cases:
Clinic backlogs, which can result in longer lab processing times.
The need for additional testing if the initial results are inconclusive.
Challenges in the MRO (Medical Review Officer) process, especially if the MRO has difficulties reaching the applicant for further clarification.
Steps to Take in Case of Delays
If you experience delays in receiving the results of your or an applicant’s drug test, we suggest the following steps:
Wait 1–2 business days after the expected timeline. Ensure there has been adequate time for the test to process.
If results are not available by the end of the next business day, contact the MRO directly to determine whether additional information may be required to complete the process.
MRO Contact Details
You can reach the Medical Review Officer (MRO) by calling 1-800-526-9341. This should expedite communication and help address any issues causing delay.
Key Notes
BackgroundChecks.com is not notified if the MRO process is initiated. The MRO will communicate directly with the individual being tested.
Be proactive if a delay exceeds the typical timeline, as this will minimize the waiting period and ensure earlier resolution.
